HOME    |    WEATHER PROTECTORS    |    SOUND BARNEYS    |    HEATER BARNEYS    |    CUSTOM WORK

First off a brief history about the use of "Barney" as told to me by an "old hand" at Birns & Sawyer.  Back when "talkies" were first being made they had a serious problem with the cameras being too noisy.  At that time a feature movie was being made of "Barney Google" and his horse "Spark Plug".  One of the camera operators suggested that placing Spark Plug's blanket over the camera might help, and it did! The blankets that were used after that were called "Barneys."

The first Sound Barneys that we made, in the '70s, were fabricated with a layer of vinyl, fiberglas as the sound deadener and Duvetyn as the liner.  In early 1980 a company came out with a material called "Baryfol" a sound deadener.  We first used it in a camera, lens to matte box "Sound Barney" for Panavision.

Panavision recognized that they could control the mechanical noise level but the sound was still emitted through the lens.  That problem has not changed!  Some of you older operators may remember those gray covers?  The persons working with the new material sure appreciated not working with fiberglas!  As time progressed we have tried different materials with a goal of stopping some of that sound being emitted. Below is a sample of our design of the Arri 16 II Sound Barney. Please also look at our Barney for ACL.
